Digital team members need leadership

Digital team members take work off your hands. They do not take leadership off your hands.

Digital team members are no longer just a topic for the future. Where they are used, they change what a team can get done in the same amount of time. What does not change is the question of who carries the responsibility.

What digital team members can do

They can research, document and structure. They can bring together information from different sources and coordinate tasks. They can operate systems and trigger workflows. They can prepare communication – and, within a clearly defined mandate, also carry it out.

What they are not allowed to do

Making decisions themselves stays outside their mandate. Not because it would be technically impossible, but because responsibility cannot be delegated to something that cannot carry it.

Less need for leadership? The opposite is true

One might assume that digital team members make leadership less necessary, because they get part of the work done themselves. The opposite is true.

They raise the demands on a clear mandate: what this role may do, and what it explicitly may not. They raise the demands on accountability: who is liable for a result a digital team member prepared. They raise the demands on escalation: when a human has to step in before something goes out. And they raise the demands on context and traceability: on what basis something was put together, and whether that can be checked afterwards.

A concrete example

On this website, Ezra Luck works as an external digital employee of MATTLI-DIGITAL – on project coordination, CRM and documentation work, and recurring marketing and coordination tasks. Ezra Luck always works under human direction: decisions, external communication and professional responsibility stay with the people in charge. Ezra's task is to bring information together and maintain an overview – not to decide.

This exact pattern – a clearly defined mandate, visible human leadership, no independent decision-making – is transferable to any organisation that uses digital team members.

Digital team members are not a substitute for leadership. They are a reason to make leadership more precise.
